The Truth About Birth as a Christian—And How to Choose What’s Right for You
You want to honor God with the way you prepare for birth.
You want to make the “right” choices.
And yet… it feels like everywhere you turn, someone is telling you something different.
Natural birth is best.
Hospital birth is safest.
God will protect you no matter what.
God gave us doctors for a reason.
You should trust your body.
You should trust the system.
You should do what’s best for your baby—even if it’s not what you want.
It’s confusing. It’s overwhelming. And it can leave you second-guessing your faith, your desires, and even your ability to make decisions.
But here’s the truth: Birth is not a moral test.
It’s not about earning approval, proving your strength, or getting everything “right.”
What Does the Bible Say About Birth?
The Bible doesn’t give us a step-by-step guide to modern birth plans—but it does show us that God is present in the process of birth, and that He cares deeply for women in labor.
It also doesn’t shy away from the truth: birth is hard.
In Genesis 3:16, after the fall, God tells Eve,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children.”
*This isn’t a curse to be afraid of—but a reminder that pain in labor is not a sign of failure or lack of faith. It’s part of the brokenness of this world, and God meets us right in the middle of it.
In John 16:21, Jesus says: “A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.”
God acknowledges the intensity of birth—and also the beauty.
Throughout Scripture, we see that God is a gentle steady presence, a source of strength, and a provider of peace in moments that feel overwhelming. That includes birth.
3 Truths to Ground You as a Christian Preparing for Birth
1. You’re Allowed to Ask Questions and Make Informed Decisions
Faith doesn’t mean blindly doing what others say. It means seeking truth—and trusting that God gave you wisdom, intuition, and discernment.
Whether you’re deciding on a provider, a place of birth, or which interventions you feel comfortable with, you are allowed to ask questions, push back, and find the answers that bring peace.
James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God… and it will be given to him.”
That includes birth decisions.
💖 Start by praying over your options. Ask God to highlight anything you need to look into. Then explore the evidence, talk with your provider, and listen to that still, small voice inside.

2. The Way You Feel Matters
God didn’t design birth to be something you dread. Yes, it’s intense. Yes, it can be unpredictable. But it was never meant to be something you suffer through silently.
Your emotions matter. Your mental health matters. Your experience matters.
When the people around you dismiss your preferences or say, “Healthy baby is all that matters,” it’s okay to lovingly disagree. You matter too. God cares deeply about your whole person—body, mind, and spirit.
Psalm 34:18 tells us: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
You don’t have to pretend everything is fine to receive His love.
3. Surrender Is Not the Same as Silence
Sometimes we think that surrendering to God means staying quiet. Going with the flow. Not making a fuss.
But surrender is about trust—not passivity. It’s about laying your fears and expectations at God’s feet and stepping forward with courage when He nudges you to speak up.
Just like Esther, sometimes we’re called to prepare and plan for such a time as this.
Proverbs 31:25 says, “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
This doesn’t mean you won’t ever feel fear—but that your preparation and faith can equip you to face what’s ahead with peace.
(P.S. If you’re struggling to find your voice, I shared practical encouragement in this post on speaking up during birth. It’s for you.)
So… What’s Right for You?
Only you can answer that question—with God’s guidance. Not your provider. Not your mom. Not a podcast or influencer or childbirth educator (not even me).
But you don’t have to figure it all out alone.
Here are a few practical ways to start:
💖 Pray first. Before researching, posting in a Facebook group, or asking for advice—pause and pray. Ask God to lead your decisions.
💖 Get informed. Education is not fear-based—it's empowering. (My post on things to know even if you're getting an epidural might help clear up some confusion.)
💖 Talk it out. Ask your partner how they feel. Discuss your hopes with your doula or provider. Give yourself permission to say what matters to you.
💖 Journal or visualize. What would it look like to feel seen, supported, and safe in birth? What are you afraid of? What do you need to feel more prepared?
You are wise.
You are capable.
And your faith can be the firm foundation that steadies you as you prepare—no matter what your birth ends up looking like.
