3 Tips for Navigating Unexpected Changes During Pregnancy, Birth, and Motherhood

Pregnancy, Birth, and Motherhood, and heck— just life in general, are full of unknowns and unexpected challenges. You’re not alone! It’s overwhelming, but these challenges don’t have to knock you down.

Here are 3 simple tips for navigating those struggles:

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings
When labor doesn’t go as planned, it’s normal to feel a range of emotions—disappointment, frustration, fear, or even grief for the birth you envisioned. Give yourself permission to feel those emotions without judgment.

Name your feelings: Saying “I feel disappointed” or “I feel scared” can help you process what’s happening.
Talk to someone you trust: Sharing your feelings with your partner, doula, or healthcare provider can bring comfort and clarity.

Pray for peace: Turn to God with an honest prayer, such as, “Lord, I’m struggling with this change. Help me find peace in Your plan and strength in this moment.”

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18).

2. Stay Focused on What You Can Control
While you may not be able to control every detail of labor, there are still ways to advocate for yourself and stay grounded in the process. Sometimes, the most meaningful moments come from things we didn’t plan. Even when labor feels chaotic or disappointing, you can find glimpses of beauty and strength by how you choose to respond.

Communicate with your birth team: Ask questions about what’s happening and what your options are. Having information can help you feel more empowered.
Use coping techniques: Focus on your breathing, use visualization, or repeat affirmations to stay present.

Reframe your mindset: Remind yourself that the ultimate goal is a safe and healthy delivery for both you and your baby. Celebrate small victories, like your resilience through contractions or the support of your birth team.
Surrender to God’s plan: Let go of rigid expectations and embrace the unique story that is unfolding for you and your baby. Trust that He is with you in every moment, even in the detours.

Breath prayers are great to combine them all!
Inhale: “Lord, You are my peace.”
Exhale: “Guide me through this.”

3. Lean on Your Support System
Labor is not something you have to go through alone. Surrounding yourself with people who uplift and support you can make all the difference.

Ask for encouragement: Let your partner, doula, or nurse remind you of your strength and progress.
Request prayer or reassurance: A simple prayer from someone you trust can bring peace and comfort.
Seek God’s strength: Meditate on verses like “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13) to draw on His power. Read more in the blog: Finding Strength and Faith in your Pregnancy Journey
